Tarasius

Tarasius
(d. 806)
   Patriarch and Saint.
Tarasius was either the uncle or the great-uncle of photius. He enjoyed the patronage of the Empress Irene, and, as a result of her influence, he was elected Patriarch of Constantinople in 784. He worked hard for better relations between the Eastern and Western Churches and, under his presidency, a General Council was successfully summoned in Nicaea in 787. Among other business, this Council anathematised the iconoclasts. Later in his reign, he was attacked for being too lenient by theodore of studios and, in consequence, he refused to recognise the marriage of Irene’s divorced son, Constantine VI. Later he crowned the Emperor Nicephoras who had usurped the throne.
